Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
